Cisco has developed a new large enterprise, multi-cluster architecture that is significantly superior to the standard CUCM architecture. This solution architecture is very much based on the Cisco HUCS architecture, but does not have the multi-tenant dial plan.
The solution architecture is called a tandem architecture and it provides either a Class 4 transit switch, or a CUCM cluster, as an SIP-based aggregation layer for the inter-cluster trunking.
The new large enterprise tandem archcitecture is shown in the diagram below:

There are a number of advantages to the architecture:
- The tandem architecture is a breakthrough architecture, which easily integrates communications across large, multi-vendor, multi-location and multi-modal businesses
- It radically simplifies complex communications networks, reduces infrastructure costs and quickly delivers voice, video, messaging, presence, Web applications anywhere
- The architecture is anchored by the multi standards-based, PSTN gateway manager (PGW), which centralizes communications control and application integration
- The architecture reduces complexity and provides the foundation for supporting enterprise-wide UC features and applications.
- Business agility is now driven through a holistic architecture for connecting users, applications and network
