What’s New with the VOSS UC Migration Solution?

Christopher May, VP Business Development, VOSS

March 2014 was an exciting time for VOSS: Our UC Migration Solution had been shortlisted for the 2014 Best of Enterprise Connect award, as it introduced a revolutionary new approach to large UC migrations, by harnessing the big data methodology of transforming vast quantities of user and device data.

Henry Barton blogged about it here.

Well, September 2014 is also turning out to be a milestone month for the VOSS UC Migration Solution.

You may have seen our announcement last week that we have taken our UC Migration Solution to the next level. We have further evolved the sophisticated ETL (extract, transform, and load) methodology from the big data industry. These latest enhancements suit the more stringent demands of a UC migration process. The methodology offered by VOSS is a DETVL (discover, extract, transform, validate, and load) approach that migrates massive amounts of complex UC data through the following core phases:

1. Discover: User and device data is mined from legacy systems across a wide cross-section of vendors and diverse systems, such as Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, Lync, Siemens, Alcatel, Mitel, as well as csv files, excel spreadsheets etc.
2. Extract: Deep data extraction, cleaning and normalization from multiple data sources and types.
3. Transform: Intelligent data transformation and enrichment of the collected data, using advanced business logic.
4. Validate: Web-based portal allows multiple administrators to examine and edit the data in real-time, prior to finalizing the migration.
5. Load: Full or partial re-sync process ahead of automated, batch-based loading to the network, ready for site cutover.

So what’s new in this latest version of our UC Migration Solution?

After carrying out a multitude of migration projects for our customers over the past 10 years, we have learnt two important lessons. No UC migration project is the same, and the complexity of a migration project is growing over time.

Firstly, we have introduced a new step - D for Discover - in our DETVL migration methodology. This is crucial, as it has enabled us not just to discover the data in the UC environment, but also to determine the quality of the data, prior to a migration. It is only by having a deep data analysis that you can truly achieve high rates of data processing automation. No other migration tools or human-based migration services gives you this deep data discovery or analysis.

Secondly, we have opened up our migration solution so that it extends beyond Cisco telephony equipment. We now mine and analyze data from a wide cross-section of multi-vendor IPT systems; in addition to importing data directly from LDAP/AD, csv files, and excel spreadsheets, we provide native support for most legacy vendor systems such as Cisco, Nortel, Avaya, Alcatel, Ericsson, Siemens, NEC, Mitel and others.

Thirdly, we unveiled a new name for our flagship product, MiGR8-2-UC. MiGR8-2-UC is a highly sophisticated product to help organizations rapidly and efficiently migrate large volumes of users, devices and UC services under a range of scenarios: TDM PBX to IP-PBX, TDM PBX to UC, IP-PBX to UC, or UC to UC. You can read more about the migration scenarios that we support, here.

With these latest enhancements we are confident that we now support organizations across the lifecycle of a UC migration; no matter what environment you want to move from or to, we have the automation tools to radically simplify the process.

Having recently used the VOSS UC Migration Solution to support a service provider in the seamless migration of a 30,000 seat bank, we were delighted with this feedback:

  • How would you rate the migration solution? (1 = bad, 10 = very good)?
    Response - 11 / 10
  • Would you recommend the migration solution to anyone else?
    Response - Yes
