Reviewing the Cisco Collaboration Summit

Reviewing the Cisco Collaboration Summit

Jim Ortbals, VP Worldwide Sales, VOSS

VOSS was a Silver sponsor at the Cisco Collaboration Summit last week, in Los Angeles.

The event is always really well attended; with a loyal following from Cisco's collaboration and technology partners, as well as a sizable attendance from the analyst community, who were there to get an early insight into Cisco's 2015 strategy for the collaboration space.

Notably, John Chambers was also in attendance, sharing the keynote with Rowan Trollope and showing Cisco's overall focus on Collaboration.

At the event, there were two significant announcements.

The big reveal was Cisco's Project Squared. It's a "simple and secure place to collaborate — with anyone, anywhere" and offers "everything everyone needs to do their best work." Essentially, Project Squared is a virtual hangout area for people that want to collaborate real-time. General feedback was that Project Squared goes a long way to address the security headaches that IT departments suffer, as a result of the growing popularity of highly used but insecure (and un-governed) apps such as Skype. It will be interesting to see the project develop, and to learn how it will be priced, as I hear that enhancements will be coming thick and fast.

The second big reveal from Cisco that also interested me, was an improved Telepresence room solution, called IX5000. This immersive multi-media experience is really nice and sleek, and much more cost effective and easier to set up than its predecessor. I got the feeling that this will improve Cisco's high-end TP business.

Back at the VOSS booth, we did a brisk trade, enjoying back to back meetings with VOSS customers and Cisco HCS partners throughout the expo opening hours. The HCS partners have VOSS UC management technology embedded within their HCS architecture, under the name of CUCDM. I was pleased that we got to show most of these organizations the recently announced enhancements that have been made to our UC management self-service functionality. The new functionality was well received, and has generated some positive public commentary on LinkedIn as a result.

Overall, the event was excellent for meetings, and a great opportunity to connect with our widespread customer and partner community. See you all at Cisco Live in Milan in January, if not before!
